# SMS API vs SMS gateway — what is the difference?

## Gateway = the pipe

An SMS gateway connects your organisation to mobile networks (in Sri Lanka: Dialog, Mobitel, Hutch, Airtel). It handles routing, Sender ID, and delivery reports.

Without a gateway, your website cannot speak operator protocols. VeloBotix is that gateway.

## API = how software uses the pipe

The SMS API is HTTP. Your PHP, Node, Python or Laravel app authenticates and asks the gateway to send a message. Humans can skip the API and use the portal for bulk campaigns.

OTP and order alerts almost always use the API. Weekend promotions often use the portal. Same account, same routes.
